I have the 6th edition. When the semester started I found I was not on track with the class which was using the 7th, SO, I spent big bucks for the 7th ed. Turns out it was thrown out money. Check the table of contents, there are very few new cases. In the beginning of the book some cases are just in a different order. In the first 200 pages, I had found 6 typos in the 6th ed. FIVE are not corrected in the 7th. $75-150 for the 7th ed. $3 up for a used 6th ed.... It's a no brainer, save your money. Spend $5 photcopying the missing cases in the library, or find them free on line. Sometimes, a new edition has important changes. This edition seems to be an attempt to kill the market in used textbooks for this course.
You probably have no choice whether to purchase this book or not as it is likely required and if it was not what in the world would you be doing buying one of these? Yet if you are required you are in luck. Farnsworth's book is legendary. The selection of cases hits all the right points from drunken farm sales, to conniving socialites, and a classic selection of King's Bench tales. Not only are the cases well selected, but the budding law student gets to read Farnsworth's wry commentary and always salient observations. The only downside is his inclusion of foreign contract law representing his love of travels around the world but this is a minor flaw. There is but one legend of Contract Case Books and his name is Farnsworth!
I am a 1L and this book is so littered with errors it has become a running joke in our class. For an extreme example, take a look at Black Industries v. Bush - the authors can't even copy the cases right. Nor am I being overly picky. The mistakes in this book are so serious that it calls into question the professionalism of the authors. Not convinced? Check p. 85 and the dissenting judges. Or p. 74, lines 9 and 12. Or p. 233 line 17 from the bottom. All of these are serious errors that affect a beginning law student's understanding. Some questions for the authors: * If this is the 7th edition, how bad are 1-6? * If the writing is this poor, how reliable is your reasoning in the notes? * Are you this sloppy with your law review articles? * What value does this book provide when we have access to WestLaw and study aids? This book costs $136 and is pushed on thousands of students each year. Don't forget the supplemental materials. Shame on you William F. Young, Carol Sanger, Neil B. Cohen, and Richard Brooks!
The book should be titled: 'The Worst Way to Spend Money'
By Rishab Kumaron Dec 08, 2012
This is the WORST book on contract law you will ever read. The editorial board and the authors of this book are literally the who's who of US Contract Law. But, none of them has read this book. It is absolutely shocking!!! The book is full of typos and substantive errors. The selection of cases is astonishing. For example, take the one case the book has on misrepresentation. Poor selection, given it deals with a very obscure point. The case itself has been criticized as wrong. The holding in so many of the cases is not actually explained. You'll often find yourself reading 5 pages of fact and 1 paragraph explaining the court's reasoning. There are times when you can read the case multiple times and be completely lost and 30 seconds on Westlaw or even Wikipedia will explain everything. For example try pages 386-390. If you are contemplating buying this book, it is because you are a law student. Please go to your professor and tell him/her to prescribe a different book. I could not do this myself, because my professor is the leading (surviving) author of the book. This book is in its seventh edition and I'm told an eighth edition is on its way. I can't imagine what previous editions were like. The authors and the editorial board should really own up and take a fresh look at this book. P.S. Please note that most positive reviews of this book are actually positive reviews of the seller for shipping the book on time and etc.
I agree with previous posters that the cases are well selected. That is possibly the only saving grace for this book. Of all my first year books, this is by far the worst. It's lack of organization and direction is confusing and unhelpful, especially to a first semester 1L. First, it approaches contracts from a somewhat backward and non-linear direction. Instead of discussing what a contract is and its various parts in an ordered manner, it essentially presents the concepts in a jumble (similar to a large bucket of Legos dumped on the floor) and expects you, a poor oblivious fool of a 1L, to put them all together without any direction. I understand it's law school, and that if you can't figure things out you probably shouldn't be in law school. But this takes unhelpful to an unnecessary level. Second, Farnsworth seems overly taken with the Restatement (2d) position. Perhaps that's because he was the reporter for it. He presses quite forcefully at times for its position, without giving due credit to alternative views or opposing positions. Finally, while I see the reason for having three levels of case discussion (principle cases, secondary cases, and cases discussed in the notes), it's net effect is unnecessary confusion. If it's important enough to discuss, give the case. If the concept is all that's important, put it in a note. The way most other successful casebooks do. Farnsworth may have been a great teacher. However that does not make him a good textbook writer. Other's I've talked to have agreed. Perhaps it does take a very special professor to make good use of this text. If that is the case, then the book is largely useless to the general 1L population.
I gave my first copy to one of my brightest middle school students who wants to be a lawyer and reordered one for myself. Great book.

The book is just like new. The most amazing used textbook buying experience! I feel like they sent me a new book.
A good casebook written by highly esteemed Farnsworth. Need to get a supplement that helps with briefs and maybe another that helps with black letter.
If this is required reading, then you'll have to buy the book and it doesn't matter what my opinion is. In this case, get it used and get it cheap - if that means Amazon like it did for me, then great. If you are a practitioner and need a brush up, then this is a good book and taught me well.
I love this book! It arrived in a quick time, and the highlighting is not too much. I'm glad I chose to purchase from this vendor. Keep up the good work!
In my opinion, this casebook should have been qualified as 'acceptable' instead of 'good'.

I knew I was purchasing a used item, so obviously I expected to see some highlighting and annotations. However, I did not expect to see such an amount of these things on the casebook; thus, this item should have been qualified as 'acceptable' instead of 'good'.
This book is organized in the worst possible manner. It's really absurd. If we didn't rely on this book so much in class, I would just buy Murray and ignore this book. It's pretty useless.
This is a law book that many 1L's will come across this year and years to come. Having said that if you're reading this review you probably are shopping for a law book because it is on a reading list for a class. When I purchased this book through Amazon, with the expedited 2 day shipping, it was still cheaper than other comparable law websites (lawbooks.com, barristerbooks.com etc). Having said that the book was the right edition and brand new for a price that was slightly less than what I would have paid at the bookstore (considering I was in NY and the law school was in MA that wouldn't have been prudent). So if you are wary of buying used; stressing day-in-day-out whether the seller is going to send the book or if they'll send the right edition or numerous other problems that may run through your mind when purchasing a used book from an anonymous source without even seeing the product, then buy this new edition. You'll be happy to know you got a great product for a reasonable price. Plus without the notes or highlight marks that may distract some readers (present company included)
I felt compelled to come on here and give a review for anyone who is not 'forced' to buy this book or any future versions of it (as they will likely suck just as much as this one). I know most of the individuals who buy this will likely have to but I must give you fair warning- make sure you buy plenty of supplements because this book is absolutely awful. Also, I am writing this in the off chance that the publisher/editors/writers will see this and take more care in writing a book that is supposed to teach law students. I would like to mention that I am using this book for my Contracts 2 course and I had a different professor & book for contracts 1, so my review is solely based on the material from the parol evidence rule on. My previous professor's book was absolutely amazing. The way it was written, the structure, the selection of cases EVERYTHING (he also wrote the book but unfortunately is on sabbatical writing a revision, thus, my need for this horrible door stop). First, the selection of cases in this book is awful. The editors decided to choose cases with very difficult subject matter, not legally speaking, but rather in terms of the 'facts' of the cases. The law that they are trying to convey could have been enumerated through many other cases that would not take hours to decipher. I am trying to learn contracts not learn the process of crude oil output regulation. The legal substantive stuff is seriously masked in a pile of unnecessary information that makes reading for class nearly impossible. Next, the editor of this book must have been a complete idiot. I cannot tell you how many times I had to re-read information because he/she apparently does not have a functioning 'comma' key. Commas are a useful tool in writing that sometimes are unnecessary, but at other times are critical in understanding what a sentence is saying. I cannot get over how many times I have literally written in a comma because of how poorly written this book is. It shocks me every time i crack this casebook open. Then there is the issue of the structure of the chapters. I am still trying to figure it out, but from what I have seen thus far, the beginning of the chapter is an introduction to the entire chapter. However, it is not labelled 'introduction' so I just read and assume that it is actually relevant material and then realize I have absolutely no idea what it is saying, which is of no surprise as I have yet to read the cases that would illustrate those points that are so vaguely brought up in the introduction. This 'introduction' would be much more useful at the end of the chapter to sum up all of the points. Yes, I understand that you can go back and read it at the end, but that is besides the point. Why put it in the beginning if no law student would understand its relevance at that point? UGH I HATE IT SO MUCH. Even more, there are also smaller mini 'introductions' within the chapters, that are likewise not labelled. Except these are even worse as they are submerged within cases, notes after the cases and (very few and poorly written) hypotheticals, to the extent that you cannot determine what is what. These also introduce information that will be read in cases following these sections- but they could easily be broken up. The word choices used in these introductions and notes are also complete BS. Why do these people find the need to make everything so difficult?????? I am not one to complain about a book- but I just cannot help myself as my previous professor's book was so much better than this one. I learned so much from that class and did very well, but this semester, despite having a phenomenal professor, I seriously feel lost at times. If I do not spend hours reading for one class (when really it should take me half the time I spend) picking through this book with a fine toothed comb, then I will surely fail this course. I 100% blame this feeling of uncertainty and fear on this horrible 'casebook.' In all, if you do not have to get this book for your course, please please please do not fall for any traps set forth by the prominence of the 'authors' because, as another review stated, I doubt that any of them have actually used this book.
Quoting 'Farnsworth On Contracts' got me out of a ridiculous agency representation agreement passed down from the prior author on a book project. They were arguing that they deserved 15% on every new version of the book I wrote. As soon as I quoted Farnsworth, the discussion was over and I have since been receiving 100% of the royalties.
