Adobe Illustrator Artwork (AI) is a proprietaryfile format developed by Adobe Systems for representing single-page vector-based drawings in either the EPS or PDF formats. The .aifilename extension is used by Adobe Illustrator.

The AI file format was originally a native format called PGF. PDF compatibility is achieved by embedding a complete copy of the PGF data within the saved PDF format file. This format is not related to .pgf using the same name Progressive Graphics Format.[5]

The same “dual path” approach as for PGF is used when saving EPS-compatible files in recent versions of Illustrator. Early versions of the AI file format are true EPS files with a restricted, compact syntax, with additional semantics represented by Illustrator-specific DSC comments that conform to DSC's Open Structuring Conventions. These files are identical to their corresponding Illustrator EPS counterparts, but with the EPS procsets (procedure sets) omitted from the file and instead externally referenced using %%Include directives.

  • Adobe After Effects can open and use .ai files for video editing.[6]
  • Cinema 4D can import .ai files for conversion to 3D images or for basic editing.
  • CorelDRAW (proprietary program) can natively edit this file format with some limitations.[7][8]
  • Corel Paint Shop Pro (proprietary program) can natively edit this file format.
  • DrawPlus (proprietary program) can import v9 and above versions of this file format (must be saved as being PDF compatible).[9]
  • FlexiSign (Vector Program used in Signmaking) Can read AI files.
  • FreeHand (proprietary program) can natively open and edit .ai file format version 8 or lower. FreeHand will export to .ai version 7 format.
  • Ghostscript (GPL-licensed program) can convert AI postscript files into various formats, and also allows programs that use Ghostscript such as GIMP to import AI files.
  • Inkscape (a free, GPL-licensed program) can import the old PostScript-based Adobe Illustrator format (up to AI ver.8) and AI files based on PDF (AI 9.0 and above).[10][11]

  • Scribus (a free, GPL-licensed Desktop publishing program) can open, edit and embed both PostScript- and PDF-based AI files.

  • Xara Xtreme (proprietary program) has support for the format that is described as 'working'. Xara Xtreme for Linux has similar support.[13]

A file with the .AI file extension is most likely an Adobe Illustrator Artwork file created by Adobe's vector graphics program called Illustrator. It's a proprietary file format developed and maintained by Adobe Systems.

Instead of using bitmap image information, AI files store the picture as paths that can be resized without losing quality. The vector image is stored in either the PDF or EPS format but the AI file extension is used since the Adobe Illustrator program is the primary software that creates files in this format.

AIT files are similar but are Illustrator Template files used for making multiple, similarly designed AI files.

If your AI file isn't an Adobe Illustrator Artwork file, it might instead be a Battlefield 2 Artificial Intelligence file. If so, it has nothing at all to do with vector images but is instead a plain text document that holds the properties for how certain game elements work.

How to Open AI Files

Adobe Illustrator is the primary program used to both create and open AI files. Some other applications that can work with Adobe Illustrator Artwork files include Adobe's Acrobat, Photoshop and After Effects programs, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, ACD Systems Canvas, Serif DrawPlus, and Cinema 4D.

If the AI file doesn't have PDF Content saved within it, and you're using Photoshop to open it, you might get a message that says something like 'This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was saved without PDF Content.' If this happens, return to Adobe Illustrator and make the file again but this time choose the 'Create PDF Compatible File' option.

Some free AI openers include Inkscape, Scribus, ideaMK's Ai Viewer and sK1. So long as the AI file is saved with PDF compatibility, some others include Preview (the macOS PDF viewer) and Adobe Reader.

Battlefield 2 is used to open AI files associated with that game but you probably can't open the file manually from within the game. Instead, it probably resides somewhere special so that the software can refer to the AI file on an as-needed basis. That said, you can most likely edit it with a free text editor.

Some programs can only open AI files that are older than a certain version. For example, the free Inkscape program can import AI files that are based on the PostScript AI format so long as the version is 8 or below, while PDF-based AI files version 9 and newer are supported.
